Biblical Truths of Daily Living

How Important is Prayer?

on July 1, 2012

How important does God consider prayer? One way to find out is to study the subject and see what God has put into his word about it.

Colossians 3:17:

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Ephesians 5:20:

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Have you every tried praying for everything? I’ve worked at praying for many things, I do well with it sometimes, generally, though it seems like I forget more than I remember. God is happy that we do our best to apply His Word in our lives.

If we decided not to try or to quit trying because we knew we would fall short, then we’ll never get to the place were we’ll have those habit patterns built. As we work towards praying for more things, God will teach us more of what we can be praying for.

We can pray for our spouses, or significant others, our children-their safety, their hearts toward God, the decisions they make. We can pray for our travel plans, any traveling we do, working our jobs, our bosses, our co-workers, our pastors, teachers.

In the Old Testament it talks about teaching our children when they get up, throughout the day and when they go to bed.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7:

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and     when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down and when thou risest up. (KJV-spelling)

Even though I’m writing about prayer, I believe these verses are still important relating to prayer, because if we’re praying throughout the day, we can incorporate those prayers when we are teaching and working with our children. When we’re working with our children throughout the day, we can show by example all the categories where prayer can be involved.

We also should be praying for those in authority over us, in our governments. We want to lead a quiet and peaceable life and be able to maintain the freedoms our forefathers fought to bring us.

I  Timothy 2:1-4:

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of Gd our Saviour;

Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

In Thessalonians, God tells us to pray all the time.

II Thessalonians 5:17, 18, 25:

Pray without ceasing.

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Brethren, pray for us.

We are encouraged to pray all the time. Prayer allows God to get involved in our lives and that of our loved ones. God cannot overstep our free will, nor that of our family members, yet he knows their heart. If we’ve been praying for them, it could be that God would be able to plant a seed encouraging them to change direction, change focus in their lives.

If you want to read a great book about prayer and being consistent with praying for others and not giving up, read about George Mueller, Delighted in God. He lived in the 1800’s yet prayed for God to be his sufficiency in his life and for the kids he cared for. It is filled with tidbits of God’s faithfulness and being faithful in prayer.

    I am writing to you today because of your reference to George Mueller. Reading his story changed my life some 45 years ago when I first stumbled on his story. Now, I have published his story in a brand new PARAPHRASED version, making it understandable for today’s readers.
